Colonial Museum

Located inside the Episcopal palace, built in 1735, you can admire a rich collection of the colonial time such as paintings, sculptures, and clothing made in gold, drinking vessels, gold holdings with emeralds inside, and multiple jewellery that belonged to the saints, besides, there were historical documents, one of them was the marriage licence of Francisco Morazan. The colonial museum is open to the public from Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays and holidays is closed.

Anthropology and History Museum

It is located in a house from the XVI century which has been totally restored. During part of the republican period it was the first presidential house in Honduras. It was the congress house as well. In one of the halls they have found paintings which they believe belong to the Justice Supreme Court in Honduras.

In 1862, it worked as the executive headquarters of the Presidents House of Government, which remained here until the capital was moved to Tegucigalpa. During this century, this construction worked as the command of weapons, mail, telegraph, and finally in the beginning of the decade of 1940, as a museum.

In between one of the last modification made before it was restored was the one made in 1940 during Carias administration. Today it works as an arqueological museum and a school dedicated to rescue the ancient styles of construction. Here they train mason workers, carpenters, blacksmith and painters, etc. all with an orientation to rehab ancient buildings of the glory season of Comayagua.

Nowadays in the exposition halls you can appreciate a 200 photo collection of Comayaguas Easter and Holy week, which include handmade rugs, processions monuments and saint images. You can also appreciate a multicolour rug made of little rests of wood dust.

The museum remains open from 8:30a.m. Through 4:00 p.m. from Tuesdays to Sundays.

Montaña de Comayagua's National Park

Mountain national park of Comayagua is located at a short distance from Comayaguas´ town.

The park offers an environment of cloudy woods and it is administrated by Ecosimco Foundation, which office is located at the exit of La Libertad, nearby Comayaguas´ Chamber of Commerce . Their phone number is 772- 4681. The office remains open from 8:00 a.m. until 4: 30 p.m. from Mondays through Fridays and from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 m. on Saturdays.

There is a well marked road starting from Rio Negro community, which you can access by taking the path that goes through La Libertad. The detour to the park is well marked. In the community you can shelter in the local school; you have to speak to Mrs. Velasquez, who is the principal. The resource keeper is Mr. Hector Gonzales, and he could be your guide as well. The road that is in construction takes you to a beautiful waterfall named "El Gavilan".

The Rugs

After almost three months of preparation at midnight, the artisans of the rugs initiate a titanic and marathonic journey up to ten hours of hard work in the "Via Crucis" street. At 9:00 a.m. you can appreciate a total of 24 rugs of stained and painted wood dust. The life of these rugs is short since the Via Crucis procession goes over the rugs at 10:30 p.m. and destroys them completely.
